Re: MINIs and Miatas, July 16

I'm going to try to make this with the new JCW, but it's going back to the dealer on Thursday to have driving lights installed. Depends on how quick they are I guess. :(

Re: Garage Day, Saturday July 31st 9 a.m.

I *should* be able to come down, I don't have anything on the blue meanie that needs worked on, but I'm always more at home turning wrenches and learning about cars than I am standing around at Sonic or whatever.

Ragtopday, I'll probably need an address to plug into my garmin. PM me.

If you ever find yourself stuck in southern IA off I35

If you ever find yourself stuck in the southern part of Decatur Co, IA J66 to Pleasanton is filled with brilliant banked alternating left and rights that don't have a speed advisory (there is no posted speed limit, in fact.) They're all about the same speed, I take them at about 90-95 (not advocati...

Re: Weird Accident

Yes! And it has to change...I'm either going to mask off the JCW logo and plastidip it, or get one of the black frames and swap the molded plastic logos. The JCW frame (for no reason that I can figure out) is only available in chrome, not black. It's instrumental in hiding a certain part of my plate...

Re: Weird Accident

I hit another bird yesterday (around the headlight? Couldn't tell...) and then another bird ran into the side of the car. I was doing like 15mph down main street....maybe it's the color?

You may be on to something, there may be some Hitchcock-esque bird shenanigans happening.

Re: Weird Accident

Hah, I can relate. I've driven a lot of rental cars doing consulting work on the east coast - the worst of which was a Chevy Cobalt. I've never been in a car that felt more unstable at highway speed. Subaru Outback on the other hand, not bad at all (despite how I loathe station wagons.) As luck woul...

Re: Weird Accident

That sucks! $1800 for a lousy bird. I got hit by an Acura in my Toyota and the repair bill was about $50 less than that. But I suppose BMW paint is top dollar...

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

Plastidip looks good in that it matches the semi-matte appearance of a lot of the other trim. The roof is definitely getting painted properly. :P

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

Doesn't seem any different. The Mini's sunroof (like most) has a built-in deflector. I don't open it all that much anyway.

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

I would agree with you there, but plastidip is less expensive and looks great. Plus I can just peel it off if I want. The plastidip on the hoodscoop has stood up to impacting bugs at 130MPH and the high-pressure washer blasting those same bugs off. But I could peel it off in a few seconds (the trick...

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

I'm considering getting rid of more chrome (the door handles, headlight rings, and driving lights specifically.) I'm also still pretty sure that I want the roof to be black, and I'm dead set on getting some black rims. :D I think it will still look good with more black on it. I'm going to leave the ...

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

Not yet. Maybe tomorrow though, the car is being driven to prom tomorrow by my best friend's little sister and is getting a coat of wax tonight. Not the same one that drove the RX8 last year, this one started out driving a stick so she's pretty capable. :D

Big city of Des Moines - But seriously though, this is good for us. I can get to Willis in around an hour and ten minutes, Baron is more like two hours and fifteen minutes. Thing is though, I'm fairly mechanically minded and share a shop space with a few other guys, one of which is a much bett...

Re: MINI Cooper Iowa Spring Fling (May 1, 2010)

A good friend of mine just got back from Iraqistan today, will have to see if she wants to co-pilot. Her husband is doing pre-mobilization training around that time so she probably needs to get out of the house.

I've never been up to the Lake Okoboji area. Sounds like a lot of fun!

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

I like the blue/bronze look, but not electric blue and bronze. I think EB looks best with either white or black rims, to match the roof and mirrors (however they might be painted.)

Re: The Blue Meanie has a new owner

I've actually had some Konig Heliums on another car in black! Similar rims, and they are very light. For me it's half aesthetics, half lightness, and aesthetics beats out lightness. I'm not a subscriber to the pound of rotating mass = 4 pounds of regular mass theory. But lightness is still lightness...

Cool. I was trying to find out how much they weigh the other day and couldn't figure out the model number.
