Plasti-Dip

Post by Zack »

Recently bought a can of plasti-dip at Advance. Gonna try it out on a piece of chrome trim on my car some time next week and see how it looks. If it comes out well, I will probably try blacking out the chrome on the car to see how that would look. Change up the style a bit. Also going to clean the heck out of the ASA's now that they are off the car and plasti-dip those black as well. Hopefully an interesting new look will result. And if I don't like it, it peals right off.

Well, not tired, so had a little fun. After some more sanding on the polished lip on the old ASA's I cleaned everything, everything, and then tried out the plasti-dip. This is the base coat and already, look at the change. Pretty cool. May try later this summer plasti-dipping my whole car.

I plasti-dipped my belt line and door handles when I first got the car. The belt line held up well. I only had issues when I had some wax remover land on it... ate right through the plasti-dip. The door handles didn't last long. The friction of my hand over 3 months was enough to wear through the dip. I didn't spray any sort of finishing layer on these so that could have helped.

Supposedly it doesn't need a finishing later but they do offer a spray can that can give you a gloss finish.

Just put the fifth coat on to that wheel. Looks good and hides the damaged polished lips nicely. Under $30 to do four wheels. Gotta get cans for the other three. They also make a glossifier for the plasti dip to give it a shiny finish. They even make metallic plasti dip. The kits are so affordable I'm thinking of doing my whole car this summar maybe.

Base price for wheels right now is $30 or so to do all four. The kits to do your whole car start at $150 last I checked. Would be a great way to conceal those paint chips on the bonnet.

What is in a kit? You can buy a spray can of Plasti dip at Home Depot for six or seven dollars.

Well I learned something interesting about plasti-dipping headlight surrounds. Either do it on a day that isn't windy, or take the headlight off and bring it inside and do it. Spent the last 30 minutes cleaning the plasti-dip out of the crevices around the headlight trim. Won't make that mistake again. Not going to plasti-dip the exterior at this time.

What I am thinking of doing for the British Gala in KC car show is plasti-dipping my Rota's Silver Aluminum finish so that the car looks a bit more retro just for that show.
