Vibrating clutch pedal

Post by Zack »

Clutch pedal started vibrating pretty bad when engaging today. I don't know what is the cause. Based on what I read it could be the clutch or slave cylinder or whatever it might be. I'm not sure. Thoughts?

They said my clutch would need replacing in 10,000 to 20,000 miles. They didn't say 150 miles after they told me.

I hope not because a $2500 bill is too much. These cars suck when it comes to maintenance costs.

True. They're so much fun to drive though and the community is great. Though I'm staring to think if I do buy another Mini, it'll be a base model clubman with an automatic. Haha

I think you'll find your throwout bearing is failing.....and there is no reason to replace only the bearing by the time you pay the labor to remove the transmission. I've had good luck with the Valeo clutch replacements for the OEM, they're about half price and replace the dual mass flywheel with a single mass. Anyone who's had one installed that I know loves it.

Have you called anyone else for a quote, like Geroge's Imports or Autosport?

I'm going to try and get the car back to Lawrence tonight and then make a phone call to KC auto sport. May give George's a call too and I'm also going to contact slimmer automotive in Lawrence since they deal with BMW and have worked on Minis in the past. That being said my boss said he would help me out to cover the repair costs (by deducting $100 a month from my paycheck) since I use my car for business and he would prefer Baron doing the work usually but I will check. The perks of working for your dad I suppose. Haha.

Made it back to Lawrence from Lenexa. Clutch seemed fine during the drive. Not sure if it was isolated incident or possibly air in the hydraulic line, something actually is failing, or (and only because I have done this before) I might have thought I had it in 1st when it might have been in 3rd. Knowing me, I'm thinking I might have had it in 3rd... lol

...but I could be wrong and you never know.

Clutch malfunctioned again today so I'm taking it to Baron on Wednesday. Replacing the clutch, throw-out bearing, and slave cylinder. Covering all bases. Previous owner replaced the clutch at 9,000 miles so this clutch has been on for quite some time. Best to get it replaced now rather than wait until I break down on the side of a road.

My Throwout bearing self destructed, punched a hole in the tranny, chewed up my output shaft seals, and I think George's only charged me about $2500 including welding up the hole in the tranny and a new clutch kit, seals, etc.
Michael B (although the MINI is Carole's toy I still get to fix and maintain it)

Baron is charging me $2700 including a new slave cylinder. Yes it's a bit more but it will be ready by end of the day when I bring it in.

So Zack, how is the clutch? This is something I will need to be thinking about soon. Only 56K on odometer but it's 13 years old. Did you see the old parts? What part gave way? Did the tech tell you what failed? :ds:

It's starting to go but the servicing is set for Wednesday next week. They will replace the clutch, slave cylinder, and throw out bearing. The throw out bearing messed up on Sunday but the clutch is having issues big time. I can still drive it but I'm making sure the next drive to the city is to Baron for the service appointment.

I will ask the technician to let me keep the parts so I can see what went wrong. My car is only 9 years old but this clutch has 81,000 miles on it. Previous owner had it replaced at 9,000 miles.

Car is back from shop. $2700 later and it is working beautiful. The mechanic gave me what is left of my throw-out bearing. Dave you were right on that one. Car runs great now.

Can't believe it costs $2700 to replace a clutch, but I'm glad you got it fixed.

Did you get a quote from KC Autosport or anyone else? I remember KC Autosport being almost 500 bucks cheaper than Baron to replace the oil filter housing gasket.

Oil filter housing gasket and cooler gasket was $300 total at Baron. So at $500 less than Baron, KC AutoSport would have to give me money back. Haha.

Negative ghost rider. To replace the oil filter housing gasket is 1K from Baron for the R56. That included the oil cooler gasket and new oil lines. Ask me how I know :)

I have the invoice from Baron for the work they did replacing the oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket. It was under $300 for me. So that is strange. Might have to do with the different engines.

Unless you are only talking about the parts. They cost about 300 bucks or so.
