We've done most of what remains of Route 66 in the MINI, missing the parts West of Kingman, AZ and East of St. Louis.

We found lots of great information at www.historic66.com and bought a series of maps at amazon.com that are fairly accurate. After two short trips on roads that would be better described as cow paths, we took the highway when an alternate "if conditions are bad" route was offered. Some of the roads are in pretty bad shape. A couple of favorite spots along the way were the diner on Route 66/Andy Devine Blvd. in Kingman and the amazing restoration of neon signs along Route 66 in Albuquerque.

I hope you decide to take the leap, buy a MINI and take this trip!!

We've done it in 3 different segments so I don't have an easy start-to-finish timeline. It seems to be the most fun when we don't have a schedule and can stop whenever we feel like it. Surprisingly there are quite a few funky little hotels remaining along the way and it's quite possible to avoid chain hotels and restaurants. We did take most of the AZ to OK route in 24 hours once but that was just scavenger hunt craziness.
