2012 Ft Leavenworth Historic Homes Tour - May 5

Post by IowaM1N1 »

Fort Leav Historic Homes Tour
Saturday, May 05 2012, 10:00am - 4:00pm
Tour several historic Fort Leavenworth homes
Location: Grant & Kearney Ave, Fort Leavenworth, KS
Contact: 913-651-2067 or 913-290-0862
Ft Leav was founded in 1827. Tour of several historic homes.
If you've never been on this tour, it is an pretty neat behind-the-scenes view of the beautiful old homes on the grounds of Fort Leavenworth.

The MAMiata club went last year and it was a fun way to spend an afternoon. Met up in the morning, drove up for the tour, then met for late lunch in Leavenworth. I think the Z club did a similar thing, too.

Anyway, never too early to plan, so wanted to throw it out there as an option for something to do in early May. That is the same weekend as MINIs on the Dragon in case you are making the run to NC.

Thanks for this Greg. The Heart of America Z Car Club did this and we LOVED IT!!! The homes are beautifully preserved and restored.

Getting on the Fort was much less of a hassle than I expected. Basically, they checked our ID's and that was it.

Afterward we went to O'Malley's in Weston for refreshment. It was a GREAT day.

I have it on the Z Club calendar.

We had this on our calendar, but our schedule now prevents us from attending.

It is a cool event and if the weather cooperates like it did last year, it makes for a very pleasant day walking the grounds of the historic Ft Leavenworth. You get to see the inside of great old houses that have been home to many famous people over the years.

I encourage you to attend if you've never been and you are a fan of architecture, old houses, military history, or local history.

Enjoy!

You folks are welcome to join the Heart of America Z Car Club for this event. Plans call for us to motor up K-5 to Leavenworth. Afterwards, we hope to head to O'Malleys in Weston. There is construction on the bridge over the MO River at Leavenworth so we'll see how badly the traffic is backed up, etc.

I'll post our meeting time and place later but typically we meet at the McDonalds on the north side of The Legends, just off Parallel.

BTW, your cars won't be "foreign" to us as 2 of our members- Imabyter and greyguy- are MINI owners and are also your members!

Here are details with meeting time and place.

"An Invitation from the Heart of America Z Car Club

Please join us as we attend the Ft. Leavenworth Homes Tour followed by our Zocial.

On Saturday, May 5th we will be meeting by 11 a.m. in the parking lot located south of the McDonalds on the north side of The Legends just off Parallel-10555 Parallel Parkway to be exact. We may not be eating until late or mid-afternoon so you may want to get a bite to eat before we depart.

We will pull out at 11:15 a.m. and cruise up to Ft. Leavenworth and tour the historic homes there. Many of these homes date back to the 1800’s and could possibly been occupied by some of the legends of the United States Army.

Please Note: We will have to go through security at the front gate. By prepared to display current insurance, registration, and drivers license or state photo ID. A photo ID is required.

Please Note #2. There is an admission for the homes tour. Last year it was $12 per person.

About 4 pm we’ll depart Ft. Leavenworth and head to O’Malley’s in wonderful Weston, MO. (about a 20-30 minute drive) for food and refreshment. If you’ve never been to Weston be sure to take the time to stroll downtown and visit the really cool shops. O’Malley’s is famous for its food and home brewed beer. For more information Google O’Malley’s Weston, MO. Departure from there is on your own.

Please Note #3. You are not required to do both. Attend whatever fits your schedule the best. We hope to see you at either or both.

Please Note #4. Driving your Z is optional. We don’t care what you drive to attend-we just want you there!

Please Note #5. You are responsible for your own tab.

Hoping to see you there!!

Yes, there is a conflict with the Mushroom Festival, which is why I have not been actively pushing this event or posting it in Announcements or with a Facebook event on our club page.

In case you cannot attend the Mushroom Festival, this is a nice event -- especially for history buffs out there.

I did this last year with the Heart of America Z Car Club and was sufficiently impressed with the drive and especially the fort to attend again this year. Hope to see some of my fellow Mini drivers there too. Steve

Saturday's tour was great! They displayed different homes than last year. Each home has a placard identifying who has previously resided there .

One house built in 1841 was formerly occupied by George Custer. Another, built in 1861, was formerly occupied by General David Patreaus. Both are still occupied.

All total, there were 11 homes and structures open. We hit 5 or 6, all within walking distance although shuttle buses are available.

If possible, I encourage everyone to make this next year. They do this only once a year.
