Classic Mini Fun Run, Part 2

Post by Minidave »

Last November Dimini and I met up with a friend and Classic Mini enthusiast in his home town of Steeleville, Mo which is about 10 miles south of Cuba and spent the weekend screaming around the Missouri backroads and had an amazing time!

We're going to do it again in March, so if you can get the time off and have a Classic Mini, come join us!

Our plan is to be gone Tues, Wed and Thurs March 19, 20 and 21 (spring break week for me at JCCC).

We'll stay at the world famous Wagonwheel Motel, right on Rt 66 in Cuba, and day trip out from there.

It's about a 4 hour drive to Cuba, we'll caravan down and check in at the WW, then head off next door to the Missouri Hick BBQ roadhouse for dinner and conversation, then bright and early the next morning we'll get breakfast and hit the road.

All of the roads around there have benefitted greatly from the recent economic stimulus and have been repaved and are in great shape!

It is possible to get a mid March snow storm, but I think the chances are good that it will be cool and sunny!

Right now we have three from KC committed to the trip, but we're limited to 10 total and with Steelville local Don and a friend, there are 5 spots accounted for and only 5 remain, so sign up quickly if you want to go! Steelville Don said he's found some new great roads to run, so we'll get to see some new scenery and places along the way.

Going now are: :chili: :ps: :elec: :indi:

Oooo I'm jealous because I like anything Route 66 and it sounds like a fun run but I can't go. :( Too much time off work and I don't think my bum suspension would be much fun on twisties.

I just did. Would is, as Paul Harvey would say, "....the rest of the story."?

BTW, Dave. I didn't realize Americans could travel to Cuba. :)

Surprisingly, despite the video evidence to the contrary, it did not "done blowed up"....

We don't know exactly what happened, but apparently it burped a little oil out of the valve cover breather onto the headers, once it burned off all was good, in fact we did another 150 miles after that!

Steffie, whasamatta with your "bum suspension"?

The cones are going out on one side so she leans a little.

Things are coming together for our Mini fun run, I'm going to haul my mig welder down with us so I can weld in a patch panel for Don on his Moke.

We have reservations at the Motel, and we're gonna get the snow out of the way this month so next month we'll just see early spring...

Right?

Right????????

We've added another classic to our little caravan, Gasmini out of Wichita will be meeting up with us along the route and he and his P'up will be hooning around the Missouri backroads too!

Welcome, Gasmini!

So, if anyone else wants to go with, better speak up soon!

Right now we have 3 classic P'ups, 3 classic Cooper S and maybe one more local classic Cooper from the Cuba area...only 3 spots left open!

No. She's got cones. They got rid of the hydrolastic in the early 70's.

If it has Hi-lo's on it they're adjustable. If not, then you either need to go with a coil spring setup or just buy some new cones - but either way a set of hi-lo adjusters will allow you to fine tune the ride height. Sounds like a garage day job to me!

Update - 1 week to liftoff!

Our plan right now is to meet at my shop at 7 am, load up the welder into Don's P'up, and head to Krispy Kreme; fortified with sugar pills, by 7:30 we'll be headed straight south to Fort Scott, where we'll rendevous with Galen in his blue 850 P'up, then go east along hiway 54 to our Motel in Cuba. From there we'll head down to Don's outside of Steelville to drop off the welder, then probably off to meet for dinner.

Our drive down looks to be about 6 hours on the road from my house, so I think by the time we hit Cuba most of us will be done driving for the day!

Weather is always questionable this time of year, but at worst we'll hit some rain..... temps right now are forcast to be mid 60's and sunny!

BTW, the Wagon Wheel Motel offers a discount if we pay cash, just FYI.

I'll have radios for all, but Don's P'up is noisey enough that he usually wears ear plugs, don't know about the other guy's cars! Radios are not of much use in the hills - cell phones work better there - radios are pretty much line of sight.

Here are a couple of pics from our last Classic Fun Run.....

Just about ready to go, loading up the tools and such...

Changed the ol, rotated the tars, aired them up a touch, checked all the other fluids, cleaned out a half metric ton of crap I was hauling around, updated my service records (cleaned the papers out of every nook and cranny), doing laundry and heading out shortly to top off the tanks and get a wash.

Weather here is gorgeous after a weekend of rain, it's sunny and the roads have already dried out, supposed to be like this in the Steelville area all week till Thursday, when it's supposed to snow! If it does I suggested we make that the "work on the Moke" day, as it's supposed to be sunny again on Friday. We'll see, it's spring in the midwest, anything can happen!

I'm taking Rose's Surface tablet, so my contributions over the next few days might range from minimal to unreadable, we'll just have to see how it goes! I bought the tablet as our traveling computer, so I wanted to give it a trial by fire.....she's already got the forum links loaded in, and the motel has a great wifi connection, and since the Surface has a USB port I can upload pics and vids to it then copy them to a thumb drive, or upload to You Tube from it too. Plus too and also I can Skype her in the evening instead of using the cell....

I'm taking my little Canon Powershot (which is what I shoot all my vids on) and plenty of AA batteries as it eats them like candy and I'm hoping to get some good run vids again. Wonder if I could prop the Surface up somewhere and take some vids with it too? It has a much better camera and I have a USB power hookup in the car to charge cell phones and such......

We got Don's exhaust tightened up so he won't get gassed out again like the last time when the manifold was cracked and the head pipe wasn't tightend properly. None of that saves me tho, when I'm following 5 or 6 classic Minis all running rich as can be compared to a modern car! Last time I had to take an hour to get some fresh air towards the end of the day after breathing fumes for 6 hours .....

Pics in the AM as we head out.

I'm looking forward to following this.

BTW, thanks for adding the word hoon and hooning to my vocabulary. I've used it several times already!

I caught that as well but really took a liking to "hooning".

Be careful down there Dave. I recently worked a hardware show in Branson and came home looking like this after only 2 days.

Thanks Dave, nothing like kicking a guy while he's down. :) I look at it as having an escort back to Don's place.
There must have been too much hooning around for the P'up.
