You're always welcome there, Davester - do I need to send you a PM on how to get to my place?

To the assembling multitudes - what do you want to do if it snows? Carry on? Move up to the next weekend?

We can only work on one car at a time in my garage, and if we don't get it done it can stay overnight, no problema.....but it will not be fun if someone's trying to change their oil out in the driveway and it's snowing or raining.

Just trying to get a consensus here.....

I may have to move some of my stuff out of the other side of the garage for bleachers.

I don't think the weather will do much of anything so I think we should carry on as planned.
Here's the weather so far...

Friday Night: A chance of rain before midnight, then a chance of rain and snow between midnight and 3am, then a chance of snow after 3am. Cloudy, with a low around 30. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 40. North northwest wind between 9 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Oh BTW, please don't ring the doorbell. My wife works nights and while the bell itself doesn't wake her, the ensuing mayhem from the MINI-Poopers does! Just knock on the garage door, we'll let you in! Or come around the side of the garage thru the fence gate to the garage back door, it'll be open....

Thanks!

I didn’t do anything for the effort but even still I learned a lot and it was fun meeting you guys and watching you tear into that MINI. Not for the faint of heart for sure.
Special thanks to you MiniDave, you’re a good host.

Dang it, got in a hurry and posted my 'change of plans' note on the wrong message thread.

Had to go to Des Moines unexpectedly this morning to install a new thermostat in my wife's house. 6 hours of unplanned windshield time today.

Hope you all had fun this morning.

Well I'll give you the bad news first....
I was going to my friends house this morning and goin down the road about 30mph all the sudden I hear a terrible grinding noise. I immediately pull to the side of the road and get out and look and my wheel is all ate up so my friends brings a jack up and I take the wheel off and the caliper is hangin by one bolt. I guess somebody didn't tighten the bolts and the top bolt worked itself out and was missing and the bottom was very loose. I went to ace to get a new bolt and replaced everything and it seems to be alright other than a little wheel damage. here is the result....

The good news is it handles like a new car, it goes where I want it to instantly, shifts smoother, smoother ride, no more funny rattle on the drivers side, the brakes feel great. The alignment isn't too bad although I will be getting one this week.

Thanks again to everyone that helped even if you forgot to tighten a few caliper bolts. I could have never done it without all the help.
If anyone needs work on their MINI I'll be glad to help!

In fairness to all those who did the work, it was pretty late and I know I was damn tired when we finished.....but rechecking everything should always be part of the job.....

Hope it didn't hurt anything too badly. Is the wheel still usable or is it rec-room wall or yard art now?

Glad to hear that we made an improvement, after all that work!

FYI, we plan to do it again this coming Sat on Boxer's car. Now that we know all the tricks, it should go a lot smoother this second time.

I was shocked and surprised to see how bad those lower control arm bushings were on this car - they were totally knackered! next time you're under your 50,000+ mile car you definitely should take a good close look at yours! However, be advised that this is not an easy or quick job to DIY.

With warmer weather expected, we should have time to get a few other cars worked on too, like for an oil change, tire rotation or what have you....

9 am at my garage, PM if you need directions.

Yeah, it was getting late but i'm glad we finished everything. Next saturday should go a lot faster and I will be there for sure.

I tried changing my oil a few minutes ago and I stripped the head on the drain bolt, so I'll order a new one and hopefully we have enough time saturday to change my oil and get that stripped bolt out. Unless someone has a trick that I could do before then.

Oh man, I wish you hadn't done that! Those can be a real bear to get out when they're rounded off. Worst case we'll weld a nut onto the end of it and use that to get it out. Be sure to buy a new one.....

Don't try to use vice grips or channel locks on it, you'll just make it worse.

For those contemplating a DIY, this is a pretty common problem on the 1st gen cars. The best thing to do is use a 6 point socket, and make sure you stay squarely on the bolt head as you apply torque.

Also don't kick it  that's sure to round it off. As I was kicking it though I heard Dave in my head saying " Don't use force, get a bigger tool" If only I listened better.

Sorry 43 for the wheel/brake problem. Maybe that was my fault. Glad to here that the car drives better. I have something positive to look forward to.

Boxer, all the work is definitely worth the improvement!

We finished around 6:30 I think. The only thing we didn't get done was the belt cuz I had the wrong size. Oh and oil change.
