Oxygen Sensor

Our 2003 Mini Cooper S service engine light came on and the code displayed is the O2 sensor but the posiblity was still there for it to be a hole in the exhaust mainfold or the pipes as well. Does anyone know how to determine which of these could be the problem since I dont want to spend 200 dollars for a sensor that isnt bad.

I don't really know about the ox. sensor, but I have a cat-back exaust systen with chrome tips for sale. It has 22,000 miles on it and will fit a '03 MCS. $50.00 pick up at my house. Could make a one ball exhaust with it.
