09 R56 not responding to fob in ignition... help!

Post by Derek1387 »

So... i just went out to leave for lunch, slid the fob into the ignition, and nothing. No lights, no camera, no action. I can unlock/lock/open the boot with the fob, but when i try to start, i get nothing. no click, no lights on the tach, nothing.

I tried reprogramming the remote, but still get nothing.

Any ideas?

Can't the car start without the fob being in the slot? A friend with an 07 Cooper S I believe leaves the fob in his pocket a lot and starts the car.

No, I can't start at all. I have to put the fob in the slot for it to recognize, but it acts like nothing is there.

I'm guessing Derek's car isn't equipped with "Comfort Access". Therefor the fob has to be inserted into the dash. I would also have the cars battery checked. After all the car is four years old.

Tried that. Even tried jump starting the car. The windows roll down, lock and unlock, radio will turn on, headlights will turn on, but when I put the key in the slot, the tach is supposed ti light up and acknowledge the key... It acts like nothing was even put in there.

It's getting towed to Baron tomorrow.... 70 miles.

And I just bought the car. 4000 miles out of warranty

Did you try searching NAM or some of the other national MINI sites?

Yes. The one person I could find with the same issue had it at the dealership for almost two weeks because they couldn't figure it out and cost him almost $2500 to fix. Ended up being some module

Everyone else who has a similar problem, can't unlock or lock or do anything with the key. I can do all of that but start the car

Well, its on a flat bed, on its way to Mini as we speak. Spoke with Isaac down there, and they will try to get to it today.

Hopefully its nothing too terrible, or else Boris will be sitting in timeout for a bit.

Ok now you need a second Mini named Natasha and then you can finally get rid of Moose and Squirrel.

Sounds like it might not be recognizing that you're pressing the brake (or the clutch if it's a manual) when you go to start it.

Well, Isaac just called and said either steering column or the actual spot where the key goes in... looking at $600 or so to fix. Should know more by the end of the day

Isaac is my go to guy at Baron when I need work done on Oliver. He helped me out big time getting the upholstery on the driver's seat repaired last year.

Was going to tell ya. I found a thread on NAM that mentioned that most likely it is an issue with the key.

Would the spare key work? Just kinda curious... I've heard it takes about a week to get a new key from Germany..but that was also on NAM so it might not be true.

I was only given one key with the car :(

BUT, Isaac said they should have a new key by Friday. Just in time to get the car in the paint booth!

I had a similar issue with my BMW ///M3. It was not a Fob, but still had to communicate between the key and the electronics before it would start. Big diff is that the BMW key was $500 instead of $220. Fortunately we were able to convince the After Market Warranty company that it was an integral part of the ignition system so I got off with a $50 deductible.
