Your Input Needed! Minis at the Market

Post by ragtopday Johnna »

Hi, friends!

Your input is needed in determining the direction our club's largest event, Minis at the Market, takes this year.

Quick history: Eleven years ago, we started having an all-MINI/Mini car show at the City Market. We had 8 or 9 cars the first year and have grown to over 50 cars. We've raised tens of thousands of dollars for Harvesters and KC Pet Project over the last 10 years with donated raffle items and had lots of fun getting together with Mini enthusiasts from all over our region.

The show was at the City Market for the first 9 years. Last year the show was moved to The Roasterie, as the City Market offered space for less than 15 cars. The Roasterie was a great venue with food trucks, parking for 50 cars, coffee tours, etc... This year, the parking area at The Roasterie may not be available due to construction, so we are again at a spot where we need to decide where and how to plan for the 11th annual event.

Here are a few options. Please share your input!
1. Return to the City Market. They have offered parking for up to 20 cars, perhaps a few more if we park super close. Not under the roof as before, uncovered area near the south entrance. We would have to strictly limit the number of entrants.

2. Instead of having an independent show, we could all go to the All Brit show on Labor Day Weekend held at Aristocrat. John Styers has welcomed us to join them and there is plenty of room for all of us. (We could perhaps find another way or event to contribute to our two local charities if we went this route.)

3. Find an alternative location again this year.

4. <YOUR IDEA HERE.> Let's hear your idea on where/how to continue with the club's annual car show.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. You are all what makes this club so amazing!

I vote number 3. I think finding an alternative location would be good for this.

I really liked last year's (even though it was my first one!). I think having as many people there as there were last year was fun for everyone, as well as good for the fundraiser! I'm sure we raised more money having that many more RSVPs.

I also don't vote for the all British one because I thought it was cool having an independent show with our people. Maybe we can still attend the British show AND have an independent show??

Just my suggestion. I will try to come up with an idea for a decent place!

I'm inclined to agree with you Robbie. We need to scout out potential venues.

Does the Boulevard Brewery have room? That could be interesting.
What about the Nelson Atkins Museum? (A car show on the lawn would be cool if it were possible.) "Mini's at the Nelson"

We should find a venue that will allow all of us. In my opinion, it's all or none. River Market lost out.

Has anyone looked into potential show space at The Legends in KC? They have tons of parking. I'm sure something could be negotiated with them for a large area of parking for our Mini's. Could call it "MINI's at the Legends"

An idea: Find a large church parking lot and ask them if we could use the parking lot for our car show. Explain the charities the car show benefits, invite the congregation to attend and see all the cars.

The new brew hall at Blvd Brewery has a huge parking lot, perfect for this event.

Limiting to 20 cars would not be good...

I also am NOT in favor of the Labor Day weekend All British car show.

How about Zona Rosa? I have seen several car shows there (Corvair show was awesome!)

I wonder if we could get the front lawn of the Nelson-Atkins. A cars in a park setting. Like a Concours D'Elegance.

I would prefer to see the show separate from the All British, although I sure would like to see more participation from the club at the All British Show - after all, MINIs/Minis are British cars!

The lawn at the Nelson would be fab, and I might know someone who could make contact for us.......

I say we find a new place. Maybe we can scope out some places during the Doughnut Run! The Nelson would be pretty cool! Are we wanting to keep in the KC area?

I've been to the VW show in Weston, there was room for many cars and Weston is a neat place.

The new parking area has more then 20 spaces,. More like 50 plus the garage area and above it it.

A venue where we aren't limited on cars would be nice. Why not have 100. Or more realistically 60.

I'm for option 3.

My favorite aspect from having the shows at the Market was that there was lots of foot traffic and the public could walk by and check out the cars and people could talk to all those interested. While the Roasterie was a nice location I missed the foot traffic of the Market.

Agree with Laurie - wherever it is needs to have a lot of foot traffic - and FOOD!!! LOL!!!!

I have seen car shows at Zona Rosa where they park around the fountain area which is kind of cool. Several shopping areas have had car shows, too. Heck, our HyVee even closes off part of their parking lot sometimes for car shows. English Landing Park sounds really fun, too!

Thanks everyone for your valuable input. If you commented, please see below. Your help is needed!

Zackattack28--Could you contact The Legends and ask if they ever host car shows? What are the insurance requirements of the club and any associated costs? We are in the information-collecting stage.

CathyV--Could you contact Zona Rosa and collect the same info as Zach will collect from The Legends?

DA MINI--Could you gather information on reserving a shelter at Shawnee Mission Park?

MiniDave--Let's explore this further about the Nelson area. Could you start a conversation with your contact regarding this? Is this Nelson specific or KCAI?

dsopoci--Where in Weston was the VW show? On Main? Know anyone with the VW club who could share info on how they made this happen and what was involved? Such a fun town!

BigBertha2--Could you gather information on what would be involved with hosting an event at both of those parks?

MicahGordon and I are in contact with Boulevard. Micah also has another option or two in mind to explore.

For reference: The show has been on a Sunday in October for all but one year when we had a Summer date. No set date for this year.

Could everyone report back by the 11th of March with what they've found out and let us all know if any of those locations would be a possibility? Thanks much!

The Market was fun. The Roasterie was good. The Brewery sound good. Any place is fine with me. I'll be there.

Zach has heard back from The Legends. They require a certificate of insurance naming them as additional insured and also a $2,500 fee.

Shall we remove that one from the list of possibilities?
