as you can see there isn't much brush left.

I took this to a local electrical shop that works on DC motors and at first they said they could do it but they would have to modify some brushes from a golf cart motor and it would be $100 parts and labor but they called today and said its not possible. I suspect they just had better things to do rather than tinker with a motor they don't know if they'll actually get working. I think i'm just going to send it to BBA Remanufacturing and suck it up.

It's a 2003, the fan seemed to be working fine, i think the placement of these is just terrible there is too much heat from the exhaust.

I can fix that motor......

All it needs is a good cleanup, some new bearings and new brushes, and maybe turn the commutator down if it's worn badly.

I just did the same repair to an electrical motor on my wife's Audi, hers was a secondary air injection pump, but the motor doesn't care what it's doing.......go here to read about it.... http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2778668

I was just going to replace the brushes and clean it out but the problem is i have no idea where to find brushes. If you think you can fix it i'll be more than happy to let you have a go.
Let me know if you'd like to and maybe we can meet up sometime. I will even pay you if you'd like :D

I just don't want to spend the $200 to have BBA do the same thing i should be able if i had the parts.

after the pump is fixed all i need is a new low pressure hose and its ready to go back in. the next thing i'm getting is camber plates and front control arm bushings. maybe i can get them sooner than later then it will definitely be a garage day.

Well, a few pics before/after......

The commutator was well worn, but the brushes didn't seem that bad to me, once I freed up the stuck one. I assume the little piece of wire in the one was put there intentionally by minicoopers43 to hold the brush back. Even so, it was stuck in the holder, cleaning it seemed to free it up.....

I replaced the bearings, machined down the commutator, cleaned and re-assembled the pump. Now to see if it works!

All back together now....

I'd like to learn more about these devices, under the brush assembly is a little "computer" of sorts, I guess it reads how far the wheel is turned or how quickly and adjusts how the motor and pump respond.....don't know for sure tho.

WOW! that looks great Dave. Thanks so much for doing all you could to my pump. It should last me quite a while longer now. Were you able to test it with a 12V battery?

Not yet, I was hoping to do that tonight when you got there, it'll take both of us, one to connect the wires and one to hold it down, I'm sure it has a lot of torque!

Dave--

I do think it is about time for you to open up your own repair shop. The club alone would probably keep you in business. :P

SUCCESS! It works, or should i say still works. The real test will be if it keeps working and doesn't randomly go out drivin down the road like it did before. Thanks a lot Dave!

OK, you've had your rebuilt Minidave special power steering pump installed for about ten weeks. Time for for a progress report. Is it still performing as good as new? How about some input on the subject----

10 weeks WOW! I can't believe its been that long. Well i haven't had a single problem with it, before it would randomly go out for short periods and now its power steering all the time. :D Minidave saved me a lot of $
