Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revisited Oct.12,2013

Post by davester »

We (MINI Cooper Club) have been invited to this event sponsored by the Triumph Club and the all British Society.

Scroll down to the Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revisited. We get to drive around lake Garnett track.
Anyone interested?

http://kansascitytriumphs.com/MembersOn ... No%203.pdf

There is no fee or cost involved except a covered dish for the picnic. Just think, Carol Shelby drove on this track!!

RSVP to 785-448-5534 or claibb@yahoo.com or presidents of KC British Car Club

I have several stories to tell about this track next time I see you all at one of our events, I was at many race events here including the last one.......it'll be a thrill to drive this track again.

I'm going to try and make it for sure, shall we caravan down en masse?

I worked the first & second year as a corner worker. As I recall Shelby did not race. He had two cars entered, with Ken Miles and Bob Bondurant(?) driving. Ther were a couple of other Cobras also entered. Miles won the production race and then entered the modified race and won that too.
That's how I remember it.

Some years back the SCCA had a road rally that ended in Garnett which was celebrating some anniversary of Lake Garnett races. They had a car show and several of former racers were there with their original race cars. It was pretty cool seeing the cars and hearing stories from the guys.
Later, I drove around part of the course. It was amazing to think they actually raced on those roads.
Have fun!

So I googled "Lake Garnett Grand Prix". So I guess I don't know what years I was there, but did see the Cobras race. I was correct about one driver - Ken Miles and there was no mention of Shelby himself racing. I was also workingm at the corner when Harvey Woodwoord drove his Elva into the lake ( look ma - no brakes! ).

Dang it -- that's the day of the MINI Cooper Iowa Fall Tour, the 11th annual joint drive between Central Iowa MINI Club and Eastern Iowa MINIs.

So many great choices every weekend this time of year....

I sent a RSVP e-mail. The reply to my inquiry asked "how many," meaning... number of MINIs who are going to roll in the caravan en masse to Garnett...

The link that Davester provided shows the itinerary.
11-1 covered dish picnic at East shelter house
1-3 gimmick rally, exploring Garnett
3-4 closed course for driving
4-5 cruising and public viewing on the square
5-6 HH and awards @ Maloan's B&G
6... dinner on your own

Other tid-bits...
"Provided for you: meat, bottled H2O, paper products/utensils"
"Bring: Side dish (A-M = salad or vegetable, N-Z dessert), lawn chair

If y'all would like... let me know by the EOTM and I will provide a car count/head count.

I just sent an RSVP for 1 MINI from Omaha and ours. My wife and I and another C.O.R.N. motorist will be down the night before. I think Scott is staying in Overland Park while my wife and I will try to get a room in Garnett.

Can we hook up along your route to the track?

Uh......I'm not sure I'm going, we have friends from Colorado supposed to show up Sat morning, I'm trying to get clarification as to what time they're coming, but I haven't heard back yet. More as I find out......

Other than that, someplace like the Great Mall in Olathe?

Change in plans for us: We're staying in Overland Park friday night.

Got an address for "The Great Big Ass Mall"?

We'll meet you there Saturday morning if we can get an address.

The GP is at our local MINI dealer. Coming home this weekend in the rain the car took water in the battery compartment in the rear. The main fuse box where that 200 amp fuse goes is melted, main power line from battery to engine is damaged. The service tech found body plugs out of their respective holes.

If the GP is not ready to go friday by noon, we'll motor down with WildThang and get our whine on!

The picnic starts at 11:00 and your suppose to bring a covered dish-side dish. Last name A-M bring salad or vegetable. If your last name starts with N-Z, bring desert.
Anyway, the lake is about an hour from Olathe. Since we don't know exactly where it is, lets meet at 9:00am. If Minidave gets to go, he has been there before and maybe lead the way.
Do a map-quest to see how long it may take you to get to the Great Big Ass Mall from your house. The address of the mall is above-- somewhere.
Don't forget to call and register.
