Radiator fan low speed setting

Post by Filthy Mechanic »

Went in for the power steering pump recall the other day and they told me that the resistor for the low speed side of the cooling fan is bad (fan only comes on in high mode). I've checked the wiring and relays involved and have an open on the low speed side where the resistor is located. Can anyone tell me if the resistor is part of the switching unit or can it be replaced separately? The schematic in the Bentley would seem to indicate that the resistor is external to the switching unit. Matilda is a November 2002 build so it uses the earlier schematic.

Pretty sure you can get a resistor that attaches to the fan and bypasses the original resistor. That being said, the fan assembly is $72 on RockAuto. That's what I did when I had my R53.

You can get a replacement resistor kit from Baron now, I understand.....

I would only use a factory part to replace the fan, those cheap ones don't last

In defense of the cheap fan. Replaced the original fan at 55,000 miles on the R53. Sold the car at 95,000 miles and the replacement fan was still working flawlessly. Just my two cents though.

Ok, thanks. I'll check with Baron when I pick up a few other things for my upcoming garage therapy session.
